Fighting for Safer and Less Congested Roads
MD 75, MD 80, Boyers Mill Road, MD 144 through New Market - these are the roads most affected by the many bad development decisions made by the last BoCC. This was always on the forefront of my thinking as I argued against those development decisions. These are the roads that will pose our greatest challenges, as we try to manage those development decisions, while ensuring that our roads are safe and usable. I discuss these road issues in more detail on the following pages: Some people will say that the developers should fix the roads! In many ways, I agree. However, I actually don't think that we should expect a developer to upgrade a major regional roadway. They should fix their part of the problem, that's for certain. However, it's not fair to expect a single developer to rebuild MD 75, for example. This might surprise some people but here’s the key point. When the County knows that such developments will over-burden the roadway, and they also know that there isn’t enough money to fix the problem, then the County must SAY NO to development. It’s irresponsible to approve developments without a clear, budgeted plan to address these road issues. It leads to congestion, accidents, injuries, and worse. This is where the last BoCC and Councilman Tony Chmelik's patron Blaine Young failed miserably. That’s something I’ll never do. So what will I do?
